The Tiger Temple was a Theravada Buddhist temple in Thailand's Kanchanaburi Province in the west of the country. It was founded in 1994 as a forest temple and sanctuary for wild animals, among them tigers, mostly Indochinese tigers. Along with nearly 250,000 people, Jay Z, Beyoncé and their daughter Blue Ivy posed with the animals last year, and marvelled that some of the world’s fiercest creatures could be so tame. Now the doors of the temple have been closed and the animals removed. After a decade of allegations by animal groups of cruelty, illegal wildlife trafficking and breeding, 1,000 police, military and government officials descended on the temple to expose a shadowy trade in tiger parts that feeds an insatiable market in China and threatens the few remaining tigers in the wild. Today’s population of wild tigers is estimated to be around 3,200, down from 100,000 in 1900. But research by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), Australia’s Conservation and Environmental Education 4 Life (Cee4life) and others, backed by investigations for Traffic, the wildlife trade monitoring network, suggest that more than 5,000 tigers are being farmed in China, 1,450 in Thailand, 180 in Vietnam and possibly 400 in Laos. In addition, there are private collections and zoos in most other Asian countries. Debbie Banks of the EIA has worked undercover at tiger farms in China. She says that for the past decade, tiger breeding has been a fast-expanding and lucrative industry, often masquerading as conservation. The existence of the farms is stoking demand for luxury products and traditional Chinese medicines, and endangering the few tigers left in the wild. “These places are stockpiling dead parts in freezers. This [raid in Thailand] was just the tip of a trade that spans south-east Asia and sees so-called tiger sanctuaries and farms secretly selling tiger parts and products on the black market for enormous profit,” she said. In Kanchanaburi, what was found out of sight of the tourists shocked even hardened wildlife investigators. Apart from 137 live tigers, they found a laboratory, suggesting that the monks were using tiger parts to make wines and medicines – as well as the carcasses of 40 cubs stored in a freezer. Farms such as these – which have grown in number and size in response to rising demand for tiger bone and other body parts, and the precipitous decline in wild tigers – say they are making people aware of the tigers’ plight and claim that their captive-bred animals could be returned to the wild. Caretakers of the 137 tigers removed from the Tiger Temple fear they will face a worse fate in government hands. On the morning of Monday, May 30 Tanya Erzinclioglu paced around the periphery of the temple with her colleagues. Every now and again, she anxiously glanced at her phone, taking calls or checking for updates. "I have no idea what's happening," she said repeatedly to herself. Tanya's mornings typically involved being inside the temple grounds where she helped to feed and observe some 137 tigers who were under her partial care. It had been her routine for six years and, from the passion with which she speaks about it, it seems to be where her heart lies. But this morning, more than 500 officers, wildlife officials, vets and police were waiting patiently outside the main entrance to the place better known as Thailand's "Tiger Temple". By the main road, a few officers sheltered from the heat under a nine-metre-high yawning tiger head sculpture. All 137 tigers were taken in an unprecedented raid, which also unearthed dead tiger cubs, a dead bear and various animal horns. "We knew that the temple was using the tigers for money," the DNP Deputy District General said, "By law, they cannot do that." Tanya, however, insisted that at least some of that money had gone into improving the living conditions of the tigers - an issue paramount to her and many of her colleagues. In particular, she highlighted the temple's pride and joy: its almost five-hectare "Tiger Island" enclosure. Completed in 2011 at an estimated cost of 90 million baht, (slightly more than $2.5m) the 28 enclosures in Tiger Island meant that, for the first time, the tigers were able to experience outside spaces, albeit on a rotating schedule. The open areas are strikingly different from other tiger zoos in the country. At the frenetic Sriracha Zoo, activities include tiger shows that seem to, in part, include having the cats jump through flaming hoops. When the ex-DNP director general visited the Tiger Temple in 2012, he actually praised the tiger's living conditions, telling the Bangkok Post: "Frankly speaking, their living conditions are better than those in state-owned zoos."

It has more than one-and-a-half thousand animals drawn from around the world in a well thought out and harmonious setting that makes this zoo and enjoyable visit. The zoos history in fact goes back the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), a well-travelled and famous monarch who brought many foreign influences and ideas back to Bangkok with him. He was inspired by botanical gardens he saw on overseas trips and was moved to create one within the Suan Dusit garden by filling in the middle of the lake and constructing a man-made hill; giving it the name Kao Din Wa Na. He also brought back a herd of chital deer from a visit to the Java Islands and bred them in the gardens of the Ambra Villa, in the Dusit Palace grounds; these would later be transferred to the Dusit Zoo. Fast forward to 1938. With Thailand now a constitutional monarchy, the government of the day, headed by the Prime Minister Field Marshal Piboolsongkram requested the land around Suan Dusit to use for a public zoo and recreational area. Prince Arthit Thip-apha, who was a Regent from 1936-42, approved the request on behalf of King Rama VIII, and he also donated the chital deer at Ambra Villa as well as the royal elephants on Sundays. Today the zoo is still indelibly linked with the royalty: as the light fades, from many parts of the zoo the stunning Palace next door, illuminated by hundreds of powerful spotlights, grabs attention in no uncertain terms. The municipality of Bangkok opened the zoo and operated it until 1954 at which point it was transferred to the state Zoological Park Organization, which also runs Thailands other zoos: Khao Khiao Open Zoo, Chiang Mai Zoo, Songkhla Zoo, and Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo. Dusit Zoo, also known as Khao Din, has more than 1,600 animals drawn from Thailand and around the world and the official website says it attracts more than 2.5 million visitors a year, making it the most popular zoo in Thailand as well as one of the citys biggest attractions.

Petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/508/253/488/shut-down-phuket-zoo-thailand.-zoo-of-death-and-extreme-cruelty-free-all-animals/ Shirts: https://www.redbubble.com/people/titantoplist/shop Monkey Shows The monkey show is basically what you’d expect to see a slave monkey doing. All actions are engaged with a strong tug on a rope that is around the monkey's neck. The monkeys ride a bicycle, play basketball, do push ups and sit up, spin a coconut with their feet and are commanded to do numerous poses for pictures. Here the monkey is holding this little umbrella and posing. Elephant Shows Next we have the elephant shows. Let me quote the Phuket Zoo’s website “Our elephants are very happy to demonstrate their skills to you and their enthusiasm is obvious” The only thing that is obvious when visiting the Phuket zoo is how depressed these poor enslaved elephants are. They are forced to do balancing acts, football or soccer games, dancing and races for their food. They are trained to come around asking for tips as well. The zoo claims the older elephants used to work for logging companies and doing tricks is a much easier life for them. Crocodile Shows The first thing you’d notice walking into the crocodile show in not the crocodiles but the smell of this area. The crocodile show pen has multiple crocodiles in shallow water that is full of feces, the crocs are constantly dominated by staff with a broom. This is a similar tactic used on baby elephants with chains on their legs. So much pain is caused by the chain, by the time an elephant grows full size they are too scary to break free even though a small chain won’t stop any elephant. These crocs fear the broom and back away once it comes close or touches them. During the crocodile show brave ahem.. Stupid staff will put their head between the jaws of an open croc’s mouth. Aquarium The aquarium at the Phuket Zoo has some stark differences in quality of life. Some of the smaller fish have more than enough room to live but some of the aquarium enclosures are far too small for many of these creatures. Look at this tortoise, it’s impossible of him or her to even turn around, the tortoise must spend all of life sitting in this one spot facing this one direction, it’s pitiful. Just looking at this makes you want to smash the glass and pull this tortoise out. Bird Park Some of the birds are chained pipes, platforms and perches, these birds are the ones that don’t need to be or don’t want to be at the zoo as they can hunt their own meal very easily on their own. Majestic birds of prey like hawk, eagles and vultures are chained by the ankles so tourists can take pictures of them all day. Big Animals The open pedestal tiger exhibits will completely shock you at first. Tigers are chained to pedestals in three different locations around the park, the park encourages you to sit with the tigers and take pictures with them for a price of course. You might wonder why the tigers don’t attack or eat humans, 2 reasons: 1 they are constantly fed so they don’t have the need to attack humans but since they are chained to their pedestal all day they have major psychological problems. Now to clarify the tigers do have a pen they go into at night time and the tigers are alternated on the pedestals. Apes Close to the monkey pen is this tiny cage with this unique monkey. This little guy was raised thinking this employee is his mother. He clings to the Phuket Zoo employees body all day.
